Entering into the Holiday Feasting Season

Our family will partake in our first feast this afternoon, a day early but we are fitting three thanksgiving feasts in this year. As I began my devotional time this morning in several places the reminder of being self-controlled was there. Thank you Jesus for the much needed reminder.

If you have found honey, eat only enough for you, lest you have your fill of it and vomit it. Proverbs 25:16

Oh what a treasure honey is, so pure, so sweet and all natural, what a gift from God. However, it is also full of sugar and we are cautioned to eat only enough. Something amazing, sweet with so many uses but we must practice self control. Enough that is all we need enough. Lest we vomit, okay I really really don't like that word. In our house I will use every other slang term to soften the act, but the bible uses vomit. GROSS! Honey vomit - don't even want to think about it. It is notable that eating your fill, not overindulging but your fill will bring about vomit. No thank you!
Looking at the beginning of this verse we are cautioned to have only enough of this sweet indulgence. We are intended to practice self control - enough.
Jesus provides enough and enough is all we need. As we enter into the season of feasting, where the world encourages us to indulge and eat our fill of the earthly bountiful feast, take a step back - eat enough. However, indulge in the bountiful harvest of grace and mercy that Jesus provides. Be thankful in all things and do not eat your fill to avoid the vomit.
Dear Jesus, I thank you that despite my sinful nature, I can come to you...that in fact you desire to be with me! Forgive me Jesus for my selfish, prideful ways. I admit that I often lack self control and far too easily fall into the pit of gluttony. I ask you today and each day that follows to put upon my heart a strong reminder to be intentional and selective in all things. To practice and live out self control in all areas of my life by leaning solely on You, Your truth and Your grace. Thank you for all of your blessings, as we enter into this holiday season.

Dig in!

Proverbs 25:28 "A man without self-control is like a city broken into and left without walls.”
